Bio:
Elena Risteska was born on April 27, 1986 in Skopje. From the early ages of her life she was interested in music, art and folk dances.
She made her television debut in 1996, during the Mak-Karaoke Show on the commercial channel A1 TV. Her popularity in the country rose in 2002 by competing and winning the music-based reality television show Play - Search For A Star. Her debut single, Ona Drugoto (The Other Thing) became a hit topping all the charts, resulting in her debut album Den I Nok (Day And Night) released in a couple of months. Following its great success, Elena began promoting herself abroad. In 2004, she performed at the Golden Stag Festival in Brasov, Romania and in 2005 she performed Ni Na Nebo, Ni Na Zemja (Neither Heaven Nor Earth) at the Suncane Skale festival in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. The video of this song began rotating on MTV Adria and her popularity continued to grow.
Nevertheless, she is the best known internationally as an ESC 2006 entrant. After everybody expected the national final to be won by the duet of Adrian Gaxha and Esma, Elena came up with her strong performance of Ninanajna (Darko Dimitrov/ Rade Vrcakovski) and emerged as a surprising winner. Later in Athens Risteska qualified for the final, and after spending most of the night on the edge of the top ten, eventually finished 12th, which is the country’s best finish in the Eurovision Song Contest so far.
After the contest Elena turned back to her Italian language and literature studies, in the same time preparing the material for her upcoming album. She also wrote some of the lyrics for the albums of Lambe Alabakovski, Aleksandra Pileva and 4Play. In July 2006, once more she performed at the Suncane Skale Festival and then traveled to Yerevan, Armenia to perform as a guest in Andre’s concert. The invitation followed after Ninanajna became a summer hit and a popular ringtone in Armenia.
In October, Elena released the single Esen Vo Mene (It’s Fall Inside Me) and by the end of the year her second album named 192 (the number prefix for emergencies) was finished and released. Besides the ESC entry Ninanajna it also contains Esen Vo Mene which happened to become the winner of the OGAE Macedonia’s selection for this year’s OGAE Song Contest.
So, it seems like destined for Elena to go to Greece. Perhaps it’s her name’s fault: Elena (Greek).
