Filippo Neviani was born in Sassuolo (Modena) on January 6th, 1972. At the age of nine he started playing the guitar and the drums, and from middle Eighties he began his career with the country band Winchester and later with the melodic rock band White Lady, acheiving a certain success in the province. In 1991 he came second at the Castrocaro Festival, which at the time was still a major occasion for upcoming artists.
In 1992 he choose his pseudonym “Nek”, releasing an album with the same title. He choose this word because he thought it represented the sound of a drum.

His talent was soon rewarded and in 1993 he came third in the newcomers section of the Sanremo festival with the song “In te” (Inside you) which spoke about an abortion (it was inspired by a real experience of a friend of his) underlining his great love for life.“In te” was also his second album, in which he also covered the song “Figli di chi” (Sons of who), written by him and sung by Mietta at the 1993 Sanremo Festival.

The two following years were spent recording demos and refining his vocal talent. His style begins to grow up becoming more international, and the lyrics speak about everyday reality in an essential way, coming about personal experiences or facts which have involved him in some way.
After signing his agreement with WEA (Warner Music), in 1997 he hit the Sanremo Festival with “Laura non c'e” (Laura isn't here), which received an enthusiastic welcome since the first presentation. Although not doing really well in the final chart, its success outside the Festival made it the real big hit of that edition. The same went for the corresponding album “Lei, gli amici e tutto il resto” (She, friends and all the rest), which became platin record selling more than 600 thousands copies. In the summer Nek took part in the Festivalbar with “Sei grande” (You're great) and went for the European market getting positive attention in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and Finland.
